11 Bookishly Bookish Questions (Sunshine Blogger Award!): ft. paint, kell’s coat, and nominations

Hi all! I feel like it’s been quite a while since I resurfaced on the World Wide Web?

*shakes fist at college courses*

Did you miss me? Well, I’m back.

Except, you know, I’m not in a pretty skirt. I’m currently in my pajamas, actually.

Anyways.

I have been nominated by the awesome Jenn from Bound to Writing for the Sunshine Blogger Award! If you have not checked out her pretty bookishly blog then whAT HATH THEE BEEN DOING WITH THY LIFE??

I have been asked 11 questions, and I shall answer them (these were so fun to answer, by the way).

Besides blogging and reading, what are your other hobbies?

I am an artist, actually! More specifically, I’m a painter. My preferred style is impressionism, but I can paint, and have painted, realistic and hyperrealistic paintings. Acrylic paint is life.

Actual footage of me on the weekends

I’d love to post pictures of my artwork .. someday. But my blog is bookishly-oriented, and I intend to keep it that way. Unless you ask? But other than that, just know I’m a painter behind-the-scenes.

Have you ever written your own book? Is it published?

I’m currently in the process of writing my own novel right now. It’s a retelling of a well-known classic, the genre is horror, and it is high fantasy-ized. That’s all I can say at the moment! I’m up to 33K out of my intended goal of 85K (yeah. that’s quite big) and I believe it’s coming along nicely .. except for the fact that I am the slowest writer to ever write. I have this thing where I keep rereading what I previously wrote and editing that instead of, you know, getting more done. Tell me I’m not alone in that? But I digress.

I plan to get my book traditionally published someday. I am also currently taking a creative writing course, so that should be interesting. And helpful.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

If you could live in any fantasy world, which one would it be?

Ooh, I like this question. And I’d have to say .. Red London, definitely (tourism-wise). I’d love to be able to visit a magicky flourishing empire with a red river and an epic palace and stay there forever. And perhaps be an Antari? I don’t know. But Red London sounds epic.

Do you prefer to stay up late to finish a book, or wake up early?

Definitely wake up early. I cannot function past 11:59 PM, a fact I blame on my irregular sleep schedule. Why? Because I wake up early. Super early. On weekends, I’m up by 6:15 AM, max. This is largely due to the fact that at that hour, I have the house to myself, and can get the majority of my reading done with the peace and quiet. Plus, you know, insomnia and all that.

Don’t I get tired during the day? Well, yeah. But God bless the miraculous liquid that is black coffee for keeping me up and running.

ME IN THE MORNINGS

Is there a certain type of weather you like to read/write during?

I like to read in just about any weather, really. I like rainy days because I’m not obligated to go out and can just sit down and get some reading done, but it doesn’t matter much. Well, it kind of does. With classes cancelled for 2 weeks due to Hurricane Harvey (isn’t it awesome being a Houstonian?), I did get much down-time to read when my family wasn’t inspecting water damage and phoning the contractors to fix the hell of a problem Harvey caused.

Splendid.

As for writing, I like to match my weather with my scene’s, so the weather influences my book’s climate, not the other way around.

Describe your ideal reading nook.

Anywhere without “recorded” noise. So: no TV, or radio, or music (unless it’s a reread.) People talking is fine, though, if I’m really into a book. I can pretty much read anywhere: my room, in class, in the car (well, sometimes), on planes (that’s actually where I can get most of my reading done, because IM STUCK IN A SEAT FOR A MINIMUM OF 3 HOURS). So yeah. I’m quite flexible.

Who is your favorite Disney princess?

Well, my favorite Disney movie of all time is Tangled (which was miles better than Frozen. FIGHT ME.) The storyline is so much more gripping and twistier and I looove the characters… so I guess that makes Rapunzel my favorite Disney princess by default?? I’m fine with that, obviously.

If you could go on a date with one fictional character who would it be?

Hm. I really don’t know? I mean, yeah, I have my favorites, but if THEY could come alive, why not their world? And their magic? And everything else? AND THEY’RE MULTI-SIDED COAT, TOO?

Yeah, I’m talking about Kell. And his coat. Unsurprisingly. I do that a lot around here, if this is your first JAAW post.

But I mean … Kell is a liiiiittle bit too old for me? I mean, HE WAS ALIVE IN 1819. So, yeah.

Kell, I adore you much-ly, but give me a couple more hundred years, s’il te plait*. Or you know, just stick with Lila. We’ll just be friends. It’ll be okay, I promise. I’ll steal your coat though, and date that.

*[how do I get a circumflex here for my French hELP].

What book do you think everyone should read?

So, I’ll answer this one as the book I think will appeal to everyone, not the book I see as my own personal favorite. And the book that has something for everyone, I think, is SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo. I mean, have you seen the reviews for that book? Many of my blogger friends whom I know have different tastes all unanimously adored the everything out of that book, so if that isn’t a testament to its flexible greatness, I don’t know what is.

I also own two copies of that book: one in regular ol’ English, and the other in French (which was translated quite perfectly and I is quite impressed).

Oh! And even if you hate the book, the hardcover is GORGEOUS. It appeals to children of all ages. Except, you know, a toddler. I think it’s a choking hazard. Or page 158 and the stabby eyeball scene.

KAZ, I LOVE YOU, SWEETIE, BUT KEEP PEOPLE’S EYES IN THEIR HEAD, PLEASE.

What advice do you wish you had before you started blogging?

OH. That review requests will start knocking on your door when your blog is less that a month old. IT HAPPENED TO ME, and I was just ???

Sir, are you lost? Surely your not asking ME. But they were! So just .. don’t underestimate yourself, or your blog. And having a review policy will actually save your soul. And your inbox.

Give one piece of advice to new bloggers.

EVERY POST MATTERS. Guys. I cannot tell you how random my stats are. There is that one kind of post that I think no one is interested in, so I kind of don’t polish it up, and then that post turns out the post popular of the month and my stats go crazy. EVERYONE ends up seeing it. And the opposite is true. I’d spend forever prettying up a post that gets little to no views. IT’S RANDOM, GUYS. So never wing a post because it might turn out the most popular, and then everyone sees that one post that looks like hell and assume your entire blog looks like hell. Which may or may not be true, you know.

I’m glad I could be of service. *bows*

For my end of this entire thingy, I get to nominate bloggers too!

I nominate:

Rekha @ Million Book Mill

Nina and Chantal @ Every Word a Doorway

Elise @ Roaming Reader

Iona @ Dragon Waffles

Katherine @ Paperback Dreamer

Sydney @ Scripturient

My questions to them are:

What is your favorite genre EVER? Your least favorite genre?

What is your idea of a perfect book cover?

What are some of your auto-buy authors?

What are some of your favorite bookish quotes?

What are three characters that you feel are most similar to YOU/ that you connect with most?

What is your ideal book length? When is too long too long?

How long have you been blogging? What is the most challenging thing about blogging? (okay technically that’s twooo questions but I DO WHAT I WANT).

Do you write? Tell me about your WIP.

What is your favorite high fantasy world/ magic system?

How’s your Goodreads reading challenge looking?

What are some of your most anticipated reads of 2018?

Enjoy! (especially #10 because HAHAHAHAHAH no one is caught up, believe me).

OH. And kindly yell at me on Twitter (I’m @justaddaword [I mean, really, what I else would I be??] ) or what-have-you when you post your responses (if you choose to do so) because I am legitimately curious to what you’ll answer to some of these.

  1. I love your answers!! Especially about Rapunzel as your favorite Disney princess because SHE’S MINE TOO!!! You’re the first person that I know that likes Rapunzel and that makes me SO excited! Also good luck with your writing! I hope to read your work one day! 🙂

  2. Thanks for the nomination! It’s super cool that you’re an artist! I’m kinda one too! I’m currently in college for visual arts but next semester that will be changing to English because I rather just do art as a hobby (oh and everyone else’s talent makes me feel inadequate but we aren’t going to talk about that… XD) I wish I could wake up early but I usually get up around 8-9 depending on if I have anything to do that day. I feel so much more productive when waking up early, which is why I’m going to be taking more early classes next semester but I just don’t have the will power to make myself get up early on weekends
