Ten 2017 Books That Shall be Conquered in 2018 (or, at least, I’ll try)

Could we please get just one year of a break on new books?

Or at least, like, a month. If only new, shiny, evilly attractive books could stop flowing out and ruining shrinking TBR piles, I guess we could at least put a dent in that long to-read pile. Yes, I realize that this plan is totally inapplicable, but … one can hope. Or pretend to hope.

With the first week of 2018 over, and my new Goodreads challenge barely inching toward the finish line (O, mighty readers who have already read about 10 books, please teach me your ways. Seriously) it did occur to me, naturally, that before getting started on the fresh batch of bookish cookies that released in 2018 (The Cruel Prince, I am coming for youuu!), there are still a whole truckload of 2017 releases that I promised I would read before year’s end, and yet .. no. #AsIfAnyoneIsSurprised

So, in an effort to feel even worse about my fabulous procrastination skills that are yet waiting to actually benefit me, I’ll be rounding up some unread 2017 books to force myself to remember them, buy them, and give them the attention they deserve. Although! It is worth noting, though, that none of them are on my shelf. Yeah, that’s right. I finally got through all the books I did buy WOOOOO! (And they say I’m not responsible).

(Well, I’m not. But shhhh).

And oh! I believe it should be mentioned that today I’ll be linking up with Top Ten Tuesday .. for the prompt of the previous Tuesday,

*everybody facepalms*

Guys, I already told you I’m a mighty procrastinator. So, next time anyone doubts me, just show them this (very) late post right here.

1. Warcross by Marie Lu

29385546

Yeahhh. This one embarrasses me to admit, because, I mean, it’s MARIE. LU. This should’ve been high priority, and I was pretty excited for it, but then .. it released, and reviews started to roll in, and they were kind of meh about it, so that pushed the book down by list. I’LL STILL READ IT, THOUGH. Don’t get me wrong. But mixed reviews scare me, and I don’t like being scared, y’all. For obvious reasons.

2. An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

30969741

Now, this one. THIS ONE. It sounds right up my alley, and that cover is gorgeous, and it’s high fantasy (<3333), and it has faeries and the MC is a painter (!!!!!), so I legit do not know why in the world this isn’t sitting on my shelf right now, read and reviewed and loved. But no. It’s none of those things, and I really have no reason as to why I haven’t picked this up yet. I mean, I literally walked into a bookstore with the intent of buying it, saw the gorgeous thing that was The Serpent King, bought that instead, and forgot all about poor, poor An Enchantment of Ravens. I’M SORRY. But to be fair, The Serpent King was a flawless piece of hell yes and much tears and the pure cinnamon roll thing that is Dillard Early Jr., and I. regret. nothing.

Okay, maybe I regret completely forgetting about this innocent book and replacing it with another. That does seem a bit cruel, now that I think about it. I’LL MAKE IT UP TO YOU, AN ENCHANTMENT OF RAVENS! Please don’t cry.

3. Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore

I am suuuper excited for this one, but I did notice that this little sparkly purple book is severely underrated?? In fact, the Goodreads ratings are really lacking and making it look bad, and truth be told, I wanted to read this one precisely to prove the average wrong. And also because one of my blogger friends whom I really trust loved it, and so .. *shrugs*.

Loving underrated books is kind of a hobby of mine, actually. It’s a bit like adopting strays, getting them cleaned up and fed.

What the hell is wrong with my metaphor skills today. Or any day, really.

4. The Hawkweed Legacy by Irena Brignull

33608901

Now, this one. THIS ONE. I am ashamed to admit that The Hawkweed Legacy has been sitting on my shelf forevermore and I KEEP REFUSING TO PICK IT UP FOR SOME REASON. Like, I don’t even know why?? I read the first one, The Hawkweed Prophecy, and loved it very much-ly, but I have to confess that I don’t remember much of what happened, which might explain why I always find another book to pick up whenever I consider finally reading this one. I’m sure it’ll recap the previous events! But still, I run away.

And also: it’s almost as if the book knows I’m being needlessly annoying about picking it up?? It’s like the cover model is going guuuurl I’m having none of that attitude today. Talk to the hand(s). It’s creepy. I feel attacked on a personal level.

The book knows all. The book sees all.

*shivers*

5. The Chaos of Standing Still by Jessica Brody

34144464

First off: THAT COVER <333. And secondly, THAT SYNOPSIS. I looove books that take place in a day. I love ’em. (Except The Sun Is Also a Star. That one could go burn in hell for all I care. My passionately-worded review can be found here, in case you wonder.) BUT BACK TO THIS ONE. Oh my goodness, I’ve been super excited for Chaos ever since I first learned of its existence. But, as it happens, when books are released at the end of the year? I am gooone. By late November, and December? I’ve already started on 2018 releases.

So this one, unfortunately, slipped my mind.

6. Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

35504431

I am a fool. A thousand times a fool. BECAUSE THIS IS JOHN GREEN’S BOOK, GUYS. THIS IS JOHN. GREEN.

How have I not read this. How. Someone explain this to me.

7. Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare

30312891

Okay, okay, I know why this wasn’t read when it was supposed to. You see, for all my talk of liking large books, little does anyone know that that love can go both ways. Because, see, while it does remain very true that I love 500+ page novels, I also am *gasp* terrified of them.

Yes, I know what you’re going to say. You’re afraid of them, Nina, but you prefer them at the same time? You prefer scary things? And before the rumor spreads that I secretly enjoy large snakes or large spiders or whatever which terrifies me, allow me to nip this in the bud: I don’t mind, nay, I PREFER to read even 600+ page novels … by authors I adore.

And Cassie Clare ain’t one of those.

I enjoy her books, I do! But I don’t think I had that commitment in me back then, with my lacking Goodreads challenge and all, to read a 700 page novel (as only a 2nd installment, no less.)

#SorryNotSorry

8. This Darkness Mine by Mindy McGinnis

30249925

Before I start talking about this one, I have to address something of huge importance: How DARE some people call that gorgeous thing of a cover ugly? It is beautiful. It is simple. If I could have this wallpapered on my bedroom walls and have the cover model looking at me threatening in the middle of the night via a mysterious diagonal slash, I would not say no. In fact I would SUGGEST that idea.

*squints at last couple of sentences*

I think, what I was trying to say, was that I love the cover. And the title, very much-ly. And the story sounds so eerie and creepy and flashback-y and I definitely need to bump this up on the ol’ TBR.

9. Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody

30237061

Oooh, now this one looks so very special. (That PURPLE <333) I actually started it before having to put it aside due to time constraints (end of the year time crunch, remember?) BUT ANYWAYS. I started it and I loved the idea of the moving city and the illusions and the licorice cherries (!!!). OH. And I’m suuuper excited for Ace of Shades coming later this year, and I’m on the street team for that! SCARHANDS ARE GONNA KILL THE COMPETETION, Y’ALL.

#AceofShades #Scars

10. Renegades by Marissa Meyer

28421168

New Marissa Meyer! Even though .. I haven’t heard the best feedback from everyone?? Ever since Heartless, things have been kind of deteriorating on Meyer’s end. BUT. I may like this one because heroes! Supervillains! Morally grey characters! You can’t go wrong with those kind of things in your book, right?

… Right?

Please don’t let me down, Meyer. I am young and fragile and I have trust issues.

So, add to my list! Which 2017
releases have you missed
out on (but toootally plan
to pick up in 2018?)
Have you read any of the
ones on my list? And how’s
your Goodreads challenge
looking?

  4. You need to read WARCROSS! It’s so good – it made it onto my Top Reads of 2017 list.
I’ve been meaning to read Daughter of the Burning City too, it’s been on my TBR for so long! I’m kind of ashamed that I haven’t read it yet.
    Also… #Scars 😉

    1. Ooh I definitely will be bumping Warcross up on the TBR, then! #SciFiAndHackersFTW Oh, and I really need to get through DoBC, too! If it’s even half as good as Ace of Shades … 😍
AND YAY A FELLOW SCARHAND! *high fives*
